Q: Haxie won't run or crashes at login. detoxfmwsxxounds
There have been some reports of FruitMenu failing on NFS volumes and in some other rare cases.

We ask that users enable crash reporting by opening the Console application in /Applications/Utilities/Console, then opening the Console's preferences, clicking crashes, and checking both boxes.

The user must then log out and back in, if a haxie is indeed crashing, the Console will open with a crash log. Send this crash log to support@unsanity.com.

Q: Xounds crashes at login or doesn't produce any audio. xounds
Disable "Preload XoundSet in Memory" in the Advanced section of the Xounds Preferences in the System Preferences application.

Q: Haxies do not affect Print Center/NetInfo Manager/Dantz Retrospect/Microsoft Application/Another Application detoxfmskwsxxounds
Mac OS X has a security feature that prevents other applications from getting into the memory space of an application "owned" by a user other than the one that's currently logged into the computer. Print Center, NetInfo Manager, and Dantz Retrospect all run under the "root" user and therefore Haxies cannot affect them. If there is another application that Haxies seem not to affect, check the owner of the application by entering the following into the terminal (sigh) (/Applications/Utilities/Terminal):

ps -axjwww

and pressing the enter key on the keyboard. This command shows the owner of all Applications/Processes running on the machine. Find the application that is not being affected and check the username on the left side of the listing. If it's not your short user name, then it's not being patched because of the above mentioned security feature. If it is your short user name, email support@unsanity.com with the name and the location (if possible) of where to get it.

Microsoft products typically do not use the standard Mac programming calls and therefore are either very difficult to patch or impossible to patch. This especially affects Windows Media Player (WiMP) and WindowShade. WiMP draws it's own windows and therefore WindowShade X cannot affect it.

Q: I disabled the dock and WindowShade X doesn't work. wsx
The dock must be running in order for WindowShade X to function. The minimize action is only available when the dock is running. The minimize button will also appear disabled and nonfunctional when the dock is disabled.

Q: Can ShadowKiller make Mac OS X run faster on my old iMac? sk
We can't say whether it will make it run faster or not, but there have been some reader reports at xlr8yourmac.com that lead in that direction.

Q: It's not possible to unshade (uncollapse/expand) a window soon after I shade (collapse) it. wsx
In order to collapse/uncollapse the same window, you must wait at least an amount of time equal to slightly more than the double-click speed of the system. If the double-click speed is set to the slowest, it could be up to 5 seconds before you can collapse/uncollapse the window again.

You can set the double-click speed in the Mouse Preference Pane in the System Preferences application.

Q: WindowShade X does the same action for Command-M as the one for clicking the minimize (minus) button. wsx
Command-M and and the Minimize button actually are the same exact action. We check to see if the command button is being held to determine which action should be taken. However, if you release the Command button to quickly (which isn't a problem in 90% of cases) the same action would be taken as if the minimize button was pressed.

Q: Xounds kills my Audio! xounds
Xounds is not really killing your audio, it's more of a bug in Mac OS X, one which manifests itself when there are too many sound channels open. Let me explain, say you have 3 applications open. Mail, iTunes, and AIM. Mail makes noise when a new email is received, that's one channel. iTunes is playing music, that's another channel, and AIM is making noise and talking, that's two more channels. You've also got Xounds installed for a total of 5 channels of audio. In OS X, if one of those channels is open at a certain time--when the computer feels like it--it and all other channels will lose audio. For iTunes, the fix is to pause and resume playback. The thing here is that it's unrelated to Xounds specifically as it's just an anonymous sound channel. But if 5 is the requirement, and Xounds happens to make the total 5 and this (as a random number) would be enough to kill the other audio streams. I personally run about 8-15 sound channels open at all times. So I see this problem with or without Xounds installed.

Q: I changed a setting in a Haxie and it doesn't show up OR The new features aren't working! fmwsxxounds
There is a great chance you have two copies of the same Haxie running or are running the wrong version. To fix this, open the System Preferences application, open the Preference Pane for whichever Haxie you are experiencing troubles with. Uncheck the "Launch at Login" Preference. Quit (Don't just close the window, choose Quit from the System Preferences Menu) the System Preferences. Reopen the System Preferences and the Haxie Preference Pane you just opened. Check "Launch at login." Log out of your user account and then log back in. All should be well.

Q: Haxie doesn't appear in System Preferences. fmwsxxounds
Apple's System Preferences application has a cache file that stores all the installed preference panes (the new name for control panels) for quick access. Problem is, the System Preferences doesn't check to see if new preference panes have been installed.

There are two possible ways to fix this:

1) Delete the file called ".ApplePrefPanesCache" in your user folder. Note the period (dot) at the beginning of the file name. This indicates the file is invisible in the Finder. The easiest way to delete it is to open the terminal (/Applications/Utilities/Terminal) and type the following on one line:

rm ~/Library/Caches/.ApplePrefPanesCache

Then pressing the enter key. The System Preferences must not be open when you run this command. Launch the System Preferences to see if it has worked.

2) Copy (Don't move) the recently installed Haxie from /Users//Library/PreferencePanes/ (a quick way to get to /Users// is to press the Home button on the Finder toolbar) into /Library/PreferencePanes/ if the last folder does not exist, it is safe to create it yourself.

Some current released versions of our Haxies have a new installer that automatically deletes the .ApplePrefPanesCache file (it's safe to delete it) and should not experience the problem. We will roll the new installer into future releases of our other Haxies.
